G502 Hero VS G502 Proteus Spectrum

The G502 Hero is actually an upgraded version of previously released G502 Proteus Spectrum. Those who already own the Proteus Spectrum would know how good the mouse is in its features and performance is. Though both are similar in many aspects these, the two main differences that make G502 Hero an upgraded version are: the improvement in DPI Optical sensor from 12,000 to 16,000 and the improved durability that makes it an everlasting mouse.

The upgrade of DPI optical sensor from 12,000 to 16,000 is really a huge upgrade in terms of number, and statistically an increase of 20 percent in improvement and precision. This improved level of sensitivity is enough to beat any competitor in level playing field, no matter whatever title you are playing.

The second plus point G502 wins against its sister mouse is an improvement in durability. Previously, the G502 Proteus Spectrum created a lot of nuisance among Logitech users due to its coarse weave on the cord sheathing, which soon breaks and withers away. The G502, on the other hand, comes with tight weave and durable material that doesn’t break away, at least not in our case which you can see in this video review.

Impeccable Design

As you can see in the picture, this is a massive gaming mouse; it suits well for gamers with large hands. Measuring at 1.6 x 3 x 5.2 inches, the mouse covers a bit more space than an ordinary mouse. Bear in mind that a mouse that is equipped with a lot of features and built for power, is bound to be heavy and large.

G502 Hero weight customization

Built in a (customizable) hefty weight of 140g, this might be a pain for those who are looking a lightweight mouse such as Razer Viper Mini and Razer Deathadder Chroma, V2, both weighed below 100g. But for me the weight was quite comfortable, as I managed to customize the weight, and didn’t feel pain in my fingers or the muscle fatigue even after using it for more than five hours. By the way, the weight is a matter of personal choice.

The good thing about the weight, however, is that, it can be reduced as per your personal preference, by removing 5 chevron-shaped, 3.6 gram weights, kept under the thumb grip. This will reduce the weight as low as 121g which is really impressive.

What I liked the most in G502 Hero’s design, were its curved shapes along the right and left buttons, which gave me a comfortable fit around my fingers. The mouse fitted so nicely that I became used to this monster in less than one hour. Though not the deal breaker, the only problem I faced was the claw grip because it didn’t feel ergonomic in my loose fingers. For those with tight grip, this might work well and give some extra edge in comfort.

Durable Buttons

The G502 Hero features durable and comfortable buttons. The performance and longevity of both the right and left buttons has been increased from 20 million clicks to 50 million clicks. That means, the buttons can be clicked continuously for two years. The performance beats the other popular mice available in the market.

Those who need separate buttons to adjust their DPI while gaming, would find this mouse most handy, as the mouse features two default buttons on the upper left side. But, others who don’t like DPI buttons on the mouse may find it a pain due to accidental misclicks.

Other than default buttons and the DPI buttons, G502 Hero also comes with customizable scroll wheel that can be locked or unlocked depending on the need and circumstances. Besides, the scroll wheel is not only comfortable in use but also equipped with two buttons that can be activated by moving the wheel on either side.

What makes G502 Hero unique and innovative mouse is that is is specifically designed for shooter games. Two of the total buttons are designed for this purpose.

First is the most popular sniper button. Located on the left side, exactly behind the thumb, the button, when clicked, instantly activates the sensitivity setting to 200 DPI. This, in turn, lets you fire at highest possible rate and with maximum accuracy.

Second buttons dedicated for shooters, is the already discussed scroll wheel lock button that lets you one scroll at a time. The lock features helps an easy navigation in scrolling menus or inventory menus. When unlocked the scroll wheel again restores its normal movement.

Flawless Performance

As the Hero is great in its features, then why wouldn’t it be perfect in performance? Performance wise, the mouse is extraordinary even beating some popular gaming mice, especially in shooting games. In its improved sensor, greater DPI, higher comfort, I really saw no point that could hinder its performance.

While testing Hero for the titles, like Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, Killing Floor 2, and GTA V what I felt was extreme level of comfort in pressing the keys. The scroll wheel moved whenever I wanted to move it, and the buttons never gave me a lag of even a microsecond. In each game the click especially the sniper button and the side DPI sensor buttons proved the best helping hands for me, though I accidentally misclicked the buttons for two or three times.

The Logitech G502 Hero features the 1,000Hz polling rate and 1ms response time as expected from a proper gaming mouse, and we hardly notice any shortcomings in this department. But, the Hero sensor is what helps the mouse shine.

The Hero sensor offers flawless tracking from our experience with it. It supports a DPI range from 100 to 16,000, though we find the upper limit largely unimportant. What matters is how well it responds to our hand movements and how consistent it is. We never notice odd mouse movements. And, thanks to tracking at max speeds over 400 inches-per-second and max accelerations over 40Gs, it’ll be hard to push this mouse past its limit.

Software and RGB Lighting:

The popular gaming mice are incomplete without the beauty of RGB lighting; and a waste of time and money without the customization software. The Logitech G502 Hero comes with both of these necessary features.

G502 Hero software

The Logitech’s software allows you to customize the RGB lighting and mouse buttons. The RGB lighting has a myriad of option that you can choose from, especially, changing the colors, brightness, and lighting pattern. The lighting intensity can be reduced or turned off to minimize the lighting effect.  Overall, the software is easy to use and comes handy even for the beginners.

Why Buy The Logitech G502 Hero?

Gamers, who already have G502, this might not be for them, because other than a few exceptions, probably most of the features included in the Hero are borrowed from G502 Original Edition. You don’t need to invest $80 in this model if you have the previous one.

However, other gamers, looking for something new and most innovative mouse with highest performance as well as precision may find it the best gaming mice available in the market.

Reasons to Buy

  • Impeccable performance
  • Smooth and shiny design
  • Amazing RGB lighting
  • Nice Scroll wheel movement

Reasons to Avoid

  • Problem of accidental misclicks due to extra buttons
  • Design not good for multi-grips users
  • Thin design for large hands

Getting Started

The G502 Hero is the best portable gaming mouse that you can go for. You just need to plug it into the PC, and you are all done to use the mouse except some of the customization features which definitely need Logitech’s software. Without software, you can just use it as a mouse for office; but not the the features like RGB lighting customization, configuring the buttons and DPI sensor setting.

Price

Depending on the time and seller, the price revolves around $50-$70. Though the original price of G502 Hero is $70, it is usually available at huge discounts especially on BlackFriday Sales where you might be able to buy it as low as $45. The price is totally worth it, as the mouse features almost all the features which a gamer needs for impeccable gaming experience.
